The basics
How Your Septic System Actually Works
Three parts, no mystery: wastewater leaves your home, the tank separates solids from liquids, and the drain field lets the soil finish the job. When any one of the three is failing, the whole system is. Scroll — watch each stage light up.
Stage 1
Wastewater leaves your home
Everything from sinks, showers, toilets and laundry flows by gravity through one buried sewer line. No power, no moving parts — which is exactly why a crushed or root-invaded line shuts the whole system down.
Stage 2
The tank separates the solids
In the two-compartment tank, solids settle to the bottom and oils float to the top. Only clarified liquid flows onward. Pump every 3–5 years or the sludge layer reaches the outlet — that's how drain fields die early.
Stage 3
The soil finishes the job
Effluent trickles through perforated laterals into gravel, where soil microbes treat it as it percolates down. Soggy ground or sewage odours here mean the field is saturated — call before it backs up into the house.
